Local Business Owners "Gather" to Network at Monthly Breakfast

The monthly breakfast allows business owners the opportunity to network, but also tackles serious issues effecting small businesses.

This month's topic was Payroll fraud and the featured speaker was Jennifer D'Angelo of Heartland Payment Systems. 

D'Angelo discussed how even though she has never encountered payroll fraud, business owners should be aware of what is out there.

"It is a hot topic and it is out there," D'Angelo said. 

D'Angelo told business owners to do periodic reviews of their employees. The best way to avoid fraud is by having a good accountant, D'Angelo added. Good accountants are constantly checking payroll and are update on all laws, D'Angelo said.

Payroll fraud often starts with ghost employees, which are employees that left the company, but still receive money through direct deposit, D'Angelo said. 

The monthly chamber breakfast meets the third Friday of every month at the. The price of admission is $10 and each breakfast features a different guest speaker.
