East Catholic Defeats Rocky Hill, 60-14

Inexperienced team picks up two wins in their first wrestling match against the Eagles.

The Terriers' wrestling team lost the first match of its season to East Catholic Wednesday night inside Rev. Robert Saunders Gymnasium at RHAM High School, 60-14.

"The team (East Catholic) was stronger and more experienced than us," said head coach Charles Surney. "For our beginners, we competed pretty well."

Vinny Patppalareo and Chris Young did pickup wins for the team, which is down to only four players.

Surney said the team started the season with 26 players but, the practice schedule and family commitments caused the majority of the players to leave the team.

"I understand, I was in their shoes once," Surney stated. "I just hope they don't regret it."

The team consists of three sophomores and one senior, Leroy Young. Leroy Young and Chris Young are the only returning players from last year's team.

"For many of our kids, it is their first year of wrestling," Surney said.

On Saturday, the team will compete in the Plainville Invitational at Plainville High School at 9 a.m.  East Catholic will compete in the Frank Chaves Invitational at Simsbury High School on Wednesday Dec. 28 at 9 a.m.
