Rocky Hill Softball Team Outlasts Southington, 2-1

The Terriers remain undefeated on the season with extra inning win against the Blue Knights.

A single in extra innings by Erin Weber would drive in Erika Leonard to put the Terriers ahead for good and give them a 2-1 win over Monday afternoon.

The girls’ softball team was tied 1-1 with Blue Knights in the top eight inning, said head coach Jim Ferris in an email to Patch Tuesday morning. When Leonard came to the plate with one out and singled up the middle. Emily Thompson was able to move her over to second base and give Weber, who went 3-4 on the day, a chance to win the game with two outs.

“Despite getting to two strikes, Weber was able to drive a pitch between the shortstop and third baseman to allow Leonard to score,” said Ferris, who is filling in for Gil Gioia, who is out on medical leave.

The Terriers received an “outstanding pitching performance” from Meg Ruonavaara where she only allowed one run and “retired the last eight batters of the game,” Ferris said.

The game also featured some “excellent defensive" plays by first baseman Katie Seaver, who made a diving catch in the fourth inning. In the fifth inning, she “came off the bag to save an errant throw and managed to tag the runner going by,” Ferris said.

“The team was up for the challenge of facing a top opponent like Southington,” he said. “They came up with some big clutch plays to allow us to come up with the win.”

The Terriers are 4-0 on the season and will play on Wednesday at 3:45 p.m. at .
