Swim Team Needs a Timing System

Car wash will be held this weekend to raise money for the device.

For a number of years, the Rocky Hill High School boys and girls swim teams have had to contend with the huge disadvantage of not having a timing system at the high school pool. However, this significant handicap may be coming to an end.

The Rocky Hill High School Swimming Boosters, led by head coach Lisa Cooney and Karol Brzozowski, are in the mist of an extensive fundraising effort to secure the money for a modern timing system.

The RHSS Swimming Boosters are currently soliciting donations from Rocky Hill residents. Members of the swim teams and staff are participating in fundraisers and sending out letters that are designed to raise the balance of funds for the basic timing equipment package, which will cost $11,500.

The money raised will also be used to defray the cost of warm-ups and other expenses throughout the season.

As Cooney has noted in her letter seeking donations the equipment is, “a necessity in keeping the program competitive with all the other schools that the team swims against in the CCC league.”

Currently two timing pads have been purchased, but the teams still need four additional timing pads and a control panel for a regulation timing system.

The boosters are looking for corporate donations in addition to smaller individual donations. Every dollar raised will be matched by the Rocky Hill Education Foundation.

As the RHHS Swimming Boosters note, the lack of a timing system at Rocky Hill High School could be a hindrance to the success of the swim teams in the near future. Last year 11 girls and 13 boys swam at states, with the majority of this group going on to the state finals. Rocky Hill has even had three girls and one boy qualify for All-American status in the last decade.

But, the teams will be hard pressed to keep up this success without a modern timing system. A modern timing system will allow the teams home pool to have the technology needed to host home meets and will allow Rocky Hill swimmers to have even more success against their competitors.

The swim team will hold a fundraiser at Phil's car wash on Cromwell Ave. Sunday from 8:00a.m. to 6:00 p.m. "The boys and girls will be working for tips and waving cars in from the street," Brzozowski said.

You can also send a donation to the RHHS Swimming Boosters via Lisa Cooney at 50 Chapin Avenue in Rocky Hill.
