American History Essay Contest Winner - Simona Sordoni

The Sarah Riggs Humphreys-Mary Silliman Chapter, National Society Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) is proud to sponsor Simona Sordoni, a 6th grade student at Middlesex Middle School in Darien, for the NSDAR American History Essay Contest.

The 2022-2023 Essay Title was “Delegate to Second Continental Congress”. The Second Continental Congress met from May 10, 1775 to March 1, 1781, and included delegates from all thirteen colonies. This Congress was instrumental in shaping what was to become the United States of America. Imagine that you are a delegate during 1775-1776. Which colony are you from and what will be important for you to accomplish for your colony? Simona Sordoni chose John Adams of Massachusetts as her delegate.

Gail Jackson, State American History Essay Chair, notified our Chapter that Simona won the 6th grade CTDAR competition, and also won the Northeast Division competition. Her essay will be submitted to the National competition and the winner will be announced at the NSDAR Continental Congress in Washington, DC this summer.

Cheryl Basztura, SRH-MS Chapter American History Chair, and Chapter Regent Jeaneen Buchanan expressed confidence in Simona’s understanding and excellence in American history. They look forward to seeing her honored at the April CTDAR Spring Conference luncheon on April 16 at the Sheraton Hotel in Rocky Hill.

The DAR perpetuates the memory and spirit of the men and women who won American independence. The group focuses on historic preservation, community education and patriotism. Any woman 18 years or older, regardless of race, religion or ethnic background, who can prove lineal descent from a patriot of the American Revolution is eligible for membership.
