Celebrating our Constitution

September 17, 2026 will mark the 239th anniversary of the signing of our national Constitution.

(Bettmann Archive)

Members of the Sarah Riggs Humphreys-Mary Silliman chapter, NSDAR would like to remind everyone that September 17, 2026 marks the 239th anniversary of the signing of our national Constitution.

Our Constitution is the cornerstone for our system of government. The founders set up the United States as a republic, with 3 branches of government designed to represent the people—and to keep each branch from assuming too much power over the other 2 branches. The Founders also included a Bill of Rights, designed to protect individuals from the collective power of any single branch. States also drafted constitutions with the same 3-branch system.

We owe a debt of gratitude to our servicemen and women—-these past and present heroes—-who sacrificed their lives to defend this Constitution and its Bill of Rights. The U.S. Constitution is the oldest constitution still in use in the world; no other document is like it.
