Constitution Week Proclaimed in Shelton

Mayor Mark A. Lauretti proclaimed September 17-23 Constitution Week. When presenting the Proclamation to Sarah Riggs Humphreys-Mary Silliman (SRH-MS) Chapter Regent Jeaneen Buchanan, the Mayor noted that September 17, 2022, marks the two hundred and thirty-fifth anniversary of the drafting of the Constitution. Mayor Lauretti noted that the Constitution is the guardian of our liberties and embodies the principles of limited government in a Republic dedicated to rule by law.

Mayor Lauretti urged all citizens to study the Constitution and reflect on the privilege of being an American with all the rights and responsibilities which that privilege involves.

Regent Buchanan thanked the Mayor on behalf of the members of the Daughters of the American Revolution. The DAR wishes to reaffirm the ideals the Framers of the Constitution had in 1787 by vigilantly protecting the freedoms guaranteed to us through this guardian of our liberties. Regent Buchanan noted that Shelton has many Revolutionary War Patriots who defended the State from the British and agreed with Mayor Lauretti that our citizens today need to protect our Constitution and encourage every generation of Americans to celebrate the spirit of the men and women who achieved our nation's independence.

Regent Buchanan mentioned the tradition of celebrating Constitution Week was begun by the DAR in 1955. She said "This is the 67th anniversary of Constitution Week, with the first proclamation issued by President Eisenhower on August 19, 1955. The Constitution is a living document that assures each citizen of the freedoms Americans cherish and appreciate.”

Regent Buchanan added “As Daughters, it is our responsibility to celebrate and keep our ancestors' legacy alive. The United States Constitution stands as a testament to the tenacity of Americans throughout history to maintain their liberties, freedoms, and inalienable rights”.

The DAR perpetuates the memory and spirit of the men and women who won American independence. The DAR is a women’s service organization dedicated to historic preservation, education and patriotism.
