Derby Mourns Loss Of Beloved Longtime City Employee
Marietta McGuire, a retired longtime employee of the city's building and community development departments, died this week. She was 77.
DERBY, CT — Marietta McGuire, a lifelong resident of Derby and longtime employee of two of the city's key departments, died Monday, according to city officials. She was 77.
In an email announcing her passing Tuesday, Town Clerk Marc Garofalo said McGuire was a retired administrative assistant for the city's building and community development departments.
McGuire was the wife of Derby Fire Police Captain and former Alderman James McGuire. She was also the daughter of former Derby Street Commissioner John Benanto, according to Garofalo.

"Marietta was a great employee of the city of Derby," Garofalo said. "Her humor and friendly personality made her department a welcome place. Whether it was at the former office on Thompson Place or at Elizabeth Street, she was a fun person to be around to enjoy her laugh, wit and sense of humor."
Garofalo also urged everyone to join the entire City Hall staff and Derby residents in "expressing their deepest condolences to the entire McGuire and Benanto families" for their loss.

"She always treated each citizen with the respect they deserved," Garofalo said. "Marietta will be missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing her. May she rest in peace."
According to her obituary posted by the Spinelli-Ricciuti Funeral Home, McGuire was employed as an administrative assistant for the Building and Zoning Department for 32 years before retiring in 2012.
She was also a devout communicant of St. Mary's Church in Derby.
A funeral service is schedule to take place Friday morning at Our Lady Queen of the Apostles Parish, located at 212 Elizabeth Street in Derby, at 10 a.m. Relatives and friends are invited to greet the family and pay their respects in the chapel of the Spinelli-Ricciuti Funeral Home, located at 62 Beaver Street in Ansonia, Thursday evening from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m.
