Derby Officials To 'Recanvass' Board of Aldermen, Tax Board Races

DERBY, CT — A close vote recanvass of two races from the city's Nov. 7 municipal election is scheduled to take place this weekend, according to Derby officials.

In an email Thursday, Town Clerk Marc Garofalo notified candidates of the planned recanvass on behalf of Head Moderator Beth Allaire.

According to Garofalo, the recanvass will be held for the following offices:

  • Board of Aldermen and Alderwomen (First Ward only) due to a close nine-vote result between Democrat Arthur Newberg (289 votes) and Republican Rich DiCarlo (280 votes).
  • Board of Apportionment and Taxation due to a close 15-vote result between Republican Isa Simmons-Derby (1,262 votes) and Republican Robert Miller Jr. (1,247 votes).

The votes for all candidates for those offices will be recanvassed pursuant to Connecticut General Statutes, Garofalo said.

The recanvass will take place Sunday at Derby City Hall, located at 1 Elizabeth Street, at 3 p.m.

According to Garofalo, the recanvass will not be held if either of the defeated candidates file a written statement with the Town Clerk waiving their right to a recanvass.
