SHELTON, CT — The coronavirus outbreak in Connecticut and across the nation is having vast impacts in Shelton and Derby, including the closure of schools and many businesses.

Cases of the illness caused by the virus, known as COVID-19, continue to rise and additional measures and closures continue to be announced. The governor declared a 'Stay Safe, Stay Home' program and all nonessential Connecticut businesses were closed.

As of Friday, there were 1,291 positive cases of coronavirus in Connecticut with 173 hospitalizations. Shelton has 18 confirmed cases and Derby has three, according to the Naugatuck Valley Health District. A Shelton man in his 80s died; he tested positive for the virus postmortem.

A total of 27 people in Connecticut have died as a result of COVID-19.

The latest coronavirus updates from Shelton and Derby

Shelton City hall is closed except for the town clerk and mayor's office, which are open by appointment only. Those who need to contact the town clerk can call 203-924-1555, extension 1503. The mayor's office is extension 1504.

All Shelton city parks, playgrounds and trails remain open. The police department is taking incident reports over the phone.

Derby Mayor Richard Dziekan ordered most city parks closed to help limit the spread of coronavirus. Derby Greenway remains open, but users are strongly encouraged to practice social distancing.

Shelton schools

Schools will remain closed until at least April 20 per Gov. Ned Lamont's executive order. April break is being modified to the following schedule:

  • Fri., April 10 (Good Friday): No distance learning.
  • Mon., April 13: No distance learning.
  • Tue., April 14: No distance learning.
  • Wed., April 15: Distance learning for staff and students.
  • Thur., April 16: Distance learning for staff and students.
  • Fri., April 17: Distance learning for staff and students.
