Local DAR Awards The Flag of the United States of America Certificate

The Sarah Riggs Humphreys-Mary Silliman Chapter of the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution recognized five individuals and one organization for the proper use, correct display and patriotic presentation of the Flag of the United States of America. Chapter Regent Jeaneen Buchanan presented the Flag Certificates on November 19, 2022 after the chapter meeting at the Shelton Community Center.

Over 100 years ago, the NSDAR established The Flag of the United States of America Committee to promote a deep patriotic sense of respect for our flag. This year the SRH-MS Chapter initiated the chapter’s first annual Flag Certificate to those members of our communities who proudly fly the Flag of the United States of America. The principal objectives are to keep the flag flying, to protect it continuously under all conditions, and to educate citizens regarding its correct usage.

Flag Certificates were presented to Shelton residents Joseph Hoefflinger, John MacDonald, Tom Pinto, and Dennis Tidrick. Also receiving an award was Juliana Lavitola of Monroe. Benjamin Schiano, Executive Director of Wesley Heights at Wesley Village in Shelton accepted this award on behalf of Wesley Heights.

Pat King, SRH-MS Chapter Chair of The Flag of the United States of America Committee said “This is the first year our Chapter has given these awards and we plan to make it an annual event. We look forward to Flag Day next June when our Chapter invites the public to celebrate Flag Day.” Ms. King added that the flag is “the most widely recognized symbol of the United States of America. Over the years the flag has gone through many changes, but its symbolism has remained the same; patriotism, liberty, freedom and unity.”

The DAR is a women’s service organization dedicated to historic preservation, education and patriotism.
