Local DAR Chapter Hands Out Valentine’s Gifts to Veterans
Valentine's Day is a day to express the love we have for our family and for our military personnel.
Valentines Day is a day to express the love we have for our family and for our military personnel. Homemade Valentine’s Day Cards is our way of showing how much we appreciate our Veterans’ service and sacrifice in keeping our nation free.
On February 3 the Sarah Riggs Humphreys-Mary Silliman Chapter Daughters of the American Revolution (SRH-MS Chapter, DAR) members created 137 Valentines and assembled goody bags for delivery to area veterans. On Valentine’s Day our Chapter Veterans Services Chair Linda Papp and her husband, Bob, brought these cards and goody bags to the veterans in Lord Chamberlain Nursing Home and Rehabilitation Center in Stratford. Linda and Bob handed out the bags thanking the veterans for their service and wishing them a happy Valentine’s Day.
The next stop was the VA Medical Center in West Haven. Voluntary Services Specialists Rhiannon Oakes and Michael Lejeune met Veterans Services Chair Linda Papp and SRH-MS Chapter Regent Jeaneen Buchanan. They spent about one and a half hours distributing the goody bags and thanking the veterans personally for their service to our country. After visiting some of the floors they then went to the waiting areas where the veterans were waiting for medical services.

The time spent at the VA Medical Center was an experience to remember and we hope to return next Valentine’s Day. Our SRH-MS Chapter is indebted to our Veterans Services Committee Chair, Linda Papp, for coordinating the visits, collecting items at each meeting, and reminding everyone of the sacrifices our service men and women have given to our Nation.
The DAR perpetuates the memory and spirit of the men and women who won American independence. Any woman who is lineally descended from an ancestor who aided the patriot cause during the American Revolution may be eligible to join.
