Memorial Day Remembrance at Long Hill Burial Ground

On a beautiful Sunday afternoon before Memorial Day, members of the Sarah Riggs Humphreys-Mary Silliman Chapter of DAR set out to place American flags provided by the Sutter-Terlizzi American Legion Post 16 on the grave sites of the veterans buried at the Long Hill Burial Ground in Shelton.

Using a cemetery plot map, Regent Jeaneen Buchanan, Registrar Mary Rozsa, Historian Claudia Farkas and HODAR Joe Hoefflinger searched for the veterans’ grave sites. They found and marked twenty veterans’ graves from the French and Indian War, the American Revolutionary War, the War of 1812 and the Civil War.

It is our honor to recognize the sacrifices of all our veterans who died fighting in the nation’s wars on this Memorial Day weekend.

The DAR perpetuates the memory and spirit of the men and women who won American independence. Any woman who is lineally descended from an ancestor who aided the patriot cause during the American Revolution may be eligible to join.
