New Policy Reportedly Adopted in Shelton for Diplomas for Deceased Students

The late Eddy Conklin's parents successfully got their son's diploma from Shelton High School.

SHELTON, CT — Shelton High School students who perish before graduation will receive an honorary or regular diploma at the school's awards ceremony, following the adoption this week of a new policy by the city's Board of Education, reports the Connecticut Post.

The new rule follows the controversy that surrounded the awarding of a posthumous diploma to the parents of the late Eddy Conklin, who died in February of his senior year.

A deceased student's name will be read during the graduation ceremony, if the family requests it. Additionally, to qualify for a regular diploma the student must have completed all credits and senior projects before their death. The superintendent can withhold the honorary diploma at his or her discretion.
