October is National Book Month

October is National Book Month and is an annual month-long event that offers you a unique opportunity to pick up a favorite book; re-read a book you read many years ago; discover a new author and re-discover an author from long ago.

The CT State Daughters of the American Revolution are celebrating National Book Month by supplying free bookmarks to celebrate this event. Jeaneen Buchanan, Regent of the Sarah Riggs Humphreys-Mary Silliman Chapter, NSDAR, distributed more than 150 bookmarks to the Plumb Memorial Library, the Branch in Huntington, the Derby Public Library on Elizabeth Street and the Derby Neck Library as well as the Edith Wheeler Memorial Library in Monroe and the Trumbull Library.

We seem to take libraries for granted and now is the time to visit your local library and discover all the options and opportunities that await you. Renew your library card. Take out a book or two. Listen to audio books. Begin that research on your family you’ve been meaning to do for a long time. Read a bunch of newspapers. Check out the exhibits. Utilize the library’s resources and maybe even bring a friend. Who knows you may find a patriot who served during the American Revolution!

Reading helps expand the mind. Reading helps you understand the world a little better. Reading lets your imagination soar. Reading enlightens and entertains you.

Visit your local library and take a free bookmark for that book you’ve always heard about and wanted to read. Now is your chance. Don’t let the world of reading pass you by.

The DAR perpetuates the memory and spirit of the men and women who won American independence. Any woman who is lineally descended from an ancestor who aided the patriot cause during the American Revolution may be eligible to join.
