Simona Sordoni - First Place National Winner, 6th Grade Essay Contest

The SRH-MS DAR Chapter which sponsored Simona, a 6th grade student at Middlesex Middle School is proud to announce her First Place Win!

The Sarah Riggs Humphreys-Mary Silliman Chapter, NSDAR is proud to announce that Simona Sardoni, who we sponsored for the 6th Grade Essay Contest, won first place at the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution 132nd Continental Congress held in Washington, DC on June 29, 2023.

The 2022-2023 Theme of the American History Essay Contest was “Delegate to Second Continental Congress”. Over 21,000 students in fifth through eighth grades wrote essays from the perspective of a delegate during the 1775-1776 Second Continental Congress, writing what colony they were from and what was important for them to accomplish for their colony. First Place for 6th Grade: Northeast Division, Simona Sordoni, Sarah Riggs Humphreys-Mary Silliman Chapter, CT. Simona chose John Adams of Massachusetts as her delegate.

Chapter Regent Jeaneen Buchanan was present at the President General’s Reception Room when Simona and her family arrived. Pamela Edwards Rouse Wright, President General spoke briefly with Simona and her family and then everyone went to the auditorium. Simona was seated on the platform with the other essay winners. Mrs. Wright introduced the American History Awards and stated that education is a primary objective of our society. She paraphrased George Washington’s Farewell Address, saying that we “…must promote institutions of knowledge thus developing an enlightened opinion.”

Helen S. Ditto, National Vice Chair, American History Essay Contest introduced the 5-8th Grade essay winners. She said “…their essays show that there is patriotism in this country and we can all be excited by that.”

Regent Jeaneen Buchanan was impressed with how self-assured and confident Simona was when she spoke to the audience of over 3000 attendees.
