SRH-MS Chapter Members Celebrate DAR Day of Service

Members of the Sarah Riggs Humphreys-Mary Silliman Chapter of the Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution participated in the National DAR Day of Service on Saturday, October 8. 2022. Members dressed warmly for this cool, crisp October day and arrived at the Huntington Burial Ground, a favorite cemetery, in Shelton to find and photograph 96 tombstones to add to the Find-A-Grave website.

The chapter has researched the Revolutionary War Patriots over the years and has held Flag Day events there and published a booklet detailing the lives and families of the patriots. But the DAR Day of Service was different in that the chapter wanted to complete photographs of as many of the tomb stones in the cemetery as possible to add to Find A Grave.

The Huntington Burial Ground lies between two busy streets near the Huntington Green in Shelton and was once a rural part of Stratford. The Old Cemetery of Huntington was organized in 1889 and a marker informs those who drive by “Here Lie the Early Settlers of Huntington”. Many of the tombstones are broken or covered by grass, but the chapter members located and photographed 47 to add to the Find-A-Grave website. This effort will enable genealogists and the public from all over the world find their ancestors online.

The National DAR Day of Service is in honor of the DAR's 132nd anniversary! DAR was founded on October 11, 1890 on the ideals of service and members have been dedicated to giving back to their communities through volunteer initiatives ever since.

Chapter members attending were Regent Jeaneen Buchanan who organized the DAR Day of Service, Lindsay Bensenhaver, Melissa Conti, Claudia Farkas, Sally Finck, Connie Glenn, Patricia King, Mary Rozsa, Patty Stacy, and Linda Tidrick. Also helping were John Glenn and Joe Hoefflinger.

The National Society Daughters of the American Revolution was founded in 1890 to promote historic preservation, education and patriotism. Its members are descended from the patriots who won American independence during the Revolutionary War. With more than 190,000 members in approximately 3,000 chapters worldwide, DAR is one of the world's largest and most active service organizations. DAR members are committed to volunteer service having served more than 12.5 million hours in communities throughout the world during the past three years.
