SRH-MS Chapter Members Celebrate DAR Day of Service

Members of the Sarah Riggs Humphreys-Mary Silliman Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution celebrated the 133rd anniversary of the founding of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution at Homes for the Brave in Bridgeport, CT on Thursday, October 12.

On October 11 every year DAR members from coast to coast celebrate the anniversary of the founding of DAR by participating in the National DAR Day of Service. Our SRH-MS Chapter members make the commitment and have participated in community service for more than 125 years. Nationally, one of the largest collective acts of service takes place in October as we celebrate the founding of the National Society with the DAR Annual Day of Service.

For our chapter’s 2023 National DAR Day of Service, we collected personal care items for the Female Soldiers: Forgotten Heroes (FS:FH). One of our talented members, Claudia Farkas, painted the two boxes used to bring the items to the Homes for the Brave.

Female Soldiers: Forgotten Heroes (FS:FH) is Connecticut’s first and only community-based transitional home exclusively for homeless female veterans and their young children. Housed at the Nicholas A. Madaras Home in Bridgeport, FS:FH provides twelve beds for female veterans and four beds, when available, for their young children.

One part of the mission of DAR is honoring and supporting those who serve our nation. Veteran Services Chair Linda Papp presented the boxes of personal care items to Julianne Burdo, Office Manager, ABRI, Homes for the Brave; Nancy Carrion, Program Manager at Madaras House, Mea Albert, Director of Communications and Outreach, and Vincent Santilli, CEO. Ms. Papp said it was “with heartfelt gratitude and thanks, we present these items to those women at the Nicholas A. Madaras Home in Bridgeport”.

SRH-MS Chapter members attending were Veterans Service Committee Chair Linda Papp, SRH-MS Chapter members Cheryl Basztura, Mary Rozsa, Linda Tidrick and Prospective Member Adrienne Such.

The National Society Daughters of the American Revolution was founded in 1890 to promote historic preservation, education and patriotism. Its members are descended from the patriots who won American independence during the Revolutionary War. Any woman, 18 years or older, regardless of race, religion or ethnic background, who can prove lineal descent from a patriot of the American Revolution is eligible.
