SRH-MS Chapter, NSDAR Presented Quilt of Valor to Joel Hurliman

The Sarah Riggs Humphreys-Mary Silliman Chapter, National Society Daughters of the American Revolution was proud to present their handmade Quilt of Valor to Joel Hurliman at the Sutter-Terlizzi American Legion Post 16 at the Flag pole on November 11, 2023. Regent Jeaneen Buchanan, one of the quilters, said Veterans Day is an appropriate opportunity to show appreciation for the service and sacrifice of those who serve our Nation.

Regent Buchanan, in presenting the Quilt of Valor, said that the Sarah Riggs Humphreys-Mary Silliman Chapter has long supported our veterans in many ways such as providing free coffee and donuts as we did today at the Veterans Day Ceremony in Shelton. She also provided a brief history of the Quilt of Valor Foundation. In recognizing, Major Joel Hurliman, Regent Buchanan said, “Today it is my honor to award Joel Hurliman with his Quilt of Valor on behalf of the Quilts of Valor Foundation and the SRH-MS Chapter, NSDAR. Joel Hurliman has over 35 years of law enforcement and was the Chief of the City of Shelton Police Department until his retirement in 2015. He was a Master Sergeant in the Connecticut Army National Guard for 23 years. Joel currently serves as Major in the Second Company Governor’s Foot Guard, part of the Armed Forces of the State of CT. Today, we hope to bring him honor and comfort with this quilt.”

Regent Jeaneen Buchanan noted “we thank you for your service in the army and national guard. We thank you for leaving all you hold dear to serve, whether in time of crisis or in time of peace. Our quilters know that freedom is not free. The cost of our freedom is the dedication of lives of men and women like you, and this quilt is meant to say Thank You for your sacrifice. And finally, this quilt is meant to offer comfort to you, and to remind you that although your family and friends cannot be with you at all times, you are forever in all of our thoughts and our hearts.”

Marion Osborne and Linda Papp, two of the quilters, wrapped the Quilt of Valor over the shoulders of Joel Hurliman as he was presented with a Quilt of Valor certificate.

Mr. Hurliman thanked the SRH-MS Chapter members for making the quilt and all veterans who have served our country.

The DAR perpetuates the memory and spirit of the men and women who won American independence. Any woman who is lineally descended from an ancestor who aided the patriot cause during the American Revolution may be eligible to join.
