SRH-MS Chapter to Present Handmade Quilt of Valor on Veterans Day

The Sarah Riggs Humphreys-Mary Silliman Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution is proud to participate in Quilts of Valor as a way of honoring a veteran who has been touched by war. The Quilts of Valor Foundation was begun 20 years ago as a way to say “thank you for your service and sacrifice serving our nation”. Since 2003, the Quilts of Valor Foundation donated over 350,000 quilts.

Quilting is as old as civilization. In the 17th century, handmade quilts were used by American colonists to keep warm. This art form continues today, following the tradition of providing warmth and comfort. Since 1890, the members of the Daughters of the American Revolution have dedicated themselves to historical preservation, promoting education, and encouraging patriotic endeavors. The Sarah Riggs Humphreys-Mary Silliman Chapter, NSDAR has a tradition of supporting these goals for over 130 years. This year our Chapter volunteered to participate in the Quilt of Valor project. Our Regent Jeaneen Buchanan said, “It is wonderful to be able to add this service to the number of projects and events we hold throughout the year to benefit our community and uphold the goals of the DAR.”

The Sarah Riggs Humphreys-Mary Silliman Chapter, NSDAR, is pleased and privileged to present its handmade quilt this Veterans Day. The process began on January 6, when three chapter members, Claudia Farkas, Marion Osborne and Linda Papp, met at the home of Regent Jeaneen Buchanan to discuss the steps for creating the quilt with Jolene Mullen, a member of the Quilt of Valor Foundation. The quilt pattern selected is called “Heroes Comfort” by Sharon H. Lake from the Quilts of Valor website.

On February 16th they began cutting out the quilt pieces, and one month later they held a “sewing blitz”, completing about 2/3 of the quilt. Marion Osborne finished the quilt top at home. On August 24th the members met to sew on the binding. The special label was added and the Quilt of Valor will be awarded to Joel Hurliman at the Sutter-Terlizzi American Legion Post 16 on Veterans Day, November 11, 2023.

The DAR perpetuates the memory and spirit of the men and women who won American independence. Any woman who is lineally descended from an ancestor who aided the patriot cause during the American Revolution may be eligible to join.
