Suspect Accused Of Stabbing Victim In Derby Home Invasion: Police

The attack occurred Monday night on Fifth Street.

DERBY, CT — A 25-year-old West Haven man was arrested on charges of home invasion, assault, criminal mischief and related violations Monday night when he stabbed a man while trying to break into the Derby home of a woman he previously dated, according to Derby police.

Daniel K. Estremera, of Meadow Brook Court, was apprehended at his home after he had eluded authorities in Derby. He was charged with the following:

  • Home invasion
  • Assault 2nd degree (2 counts)
  • Assault 3rd degree
  • Criminal Mischief 2nd degree
  • Carrying a Dangerous Weapon
  • Reckless Driving
  • Engaging in Pursuit
  • Operating without a License
  • Operating unregistered motor vehicle
  • Mandatory Security (not carrying proper insurance)

In addition to stabbing one victim twice, Estremera also is accused of punching the woman he dated in the face during the attack.

"The female victim refused medical treatment and the male was transported by ambulance to Yale New Haven Hospital," Derby police wrote on Facebook, adding that the stabbing victim was in stable condition Tuesday, and is expected to be released.

The incident began at about 11:45 p.m., when Derby police officers were called to a Fifth Street apartment on a report of a domestic assault in progress.

As officers arrived, they found Estremera in front of the home swinging an unknown object at the female victim's vehicle, police said.

"Despite repeated requests to stop and drop the unknown object, Estremera ignored officer's orders to stop and fled the scene in a motor vehicle," Derby police said. "Derby officers attempted to stop the vehicle and a after short pursuit he eluded officers."

Estremera had arrived at the victim's home uninvited, police said, and he climbed on the front porch to the victim's balcony.

"When confronted by the residents, Estremera then punched the female victim in the face, and stabbed her male friend twice, who had attempted to defend her from Estremera," police said.

Estremera kept trying to force his way into the home, but the other occupants of the apartment had to repeatedly had to barricade the door with their bodies to keep him out, according to police.

West Haven police later apprehended Estremera at his Meadow Brook Court home. He had a laceration to his hand and was transported to Yale New Haven Hospital where he was treated and released to police custody.

Estremera is being held in lieu of bail of $250,000, and he is scheduled to appear in Derby Superior Court on May 19.
