Worker Rescued After Falling Down Embankment Near Derby Cemetery: Storm Engine Co.

DERBY, CT — A worker who fell down a steep embankment after suffering a medical emergency was rescued Monday afternoon in Derby, according to the Storm Engine Co./Ambulance Corps Co. 2.

In a Facebook post, officials said crews were called to Oak Cliff Cemetery on Hawthorne Avenue just before 1 p.m. after receiving a report of a worker experiencing a medical emergency.

When Storm Ambulance & Rescue crews arrived in the area, they discovered the worker had suffered a medical emergency and fallen approximately 25 feet down a steep embankment in the back of the cemetery, Storm Engine officials said.

Due to the difficult terrain, crews conducted a low-angle rope rescue operation and safely retrieved the worker from the embankment, officials said.

During the rescue, the Storm Ambulance Robotics Division launched a drone to provide aerial observation, marking the first operational deployment under the organization's new drone program, officials said.

"For generations, rescuers have relied on ropes, training and teamwork," Chief Thomas Lenart said in the post. "Today, we add drones and advanced technology to that toolbox, giving responders better information while maintaining the same commitment to saving lives."

Officials also noted the incident "highlights the value of specialized rescue capabilities and emerging technologies in supporting patient care and responder safety."
