Beloved Simsbury Fire Chief Calls It A Career

SIMSBURY, CT — For two decades, the Simsbury Volunteer Fire Co. has been led by James Baldis through times of trouble, tribulation, and, even, some proud moments of heroism.

This week, Baldis' long tenure as fire chief ended with the pomp and circumstance benefitting a man who gave 47 years of his life to the SVFC.

Wednesday night, the department hosted a "Change of Command" ceremony at its main fire station that also served as a tribute to Baldis' tenure.

The department is in good hands as Capt. Todd Myers was sworn in to replace the SVFC legend.

In recent days, tributes from the department and community have flooded cyberspace.

"Chief Baldis has always put the well-being of our community first. His unwavering commitment, leadership, and compassion have made a profound impact on the members of the SVFC," wrote the SVFC via Facebook.

The Town of Simsbury even granted Baldis with a street sign bearing his name as a token of its appreciation.

As for Myers, firefighters said they're ready to welcome the veteran firefighter into his new leadership role.

"We look forward to serving under his leadership," wrote firefighters.
