FRIENDS CONCERT SERIES: TOM O’CARROLL – IRISH FOLK SINGER / STORYTELLER

Tom O'Carroll, originally from Dublin, plays the guitar, a bodhran (an Irish goat-skin drum) and a ‘humble little instrument’ called the tin-whistle, which he described as similar to a penny-whistle. “It’s got six holes in it. You puff in one end and sometimes, music occurs,” O’Carroll said.

Tom has been sharing songs of his native land since the early 1970s. “It chose me,” he said. “I’m not living unless I’m learning a new song.' Known as a folklorist, folksinger and instrumentalist, Tom O'Carroll brings a wealth of song, story, humor and wit to his performance. Those attending are in for lots of sounds and snippets of history, folklore and genealogy. He has played concerts, festivals, colleges, libraries and pubs all over the U.S., Canada, as well as his native Ireland, and a stint for one month in Seoul, South Korea. Whether playing a plaintive air on the tin whistle, or singing and playing rousing traditional songs, to the accompaniment of the guitar or bodhran, Tom will captivate all with his program of lively Irish culture.

'He was terrific. He performed a very pleasant mixture of old favorites, obscure ballads and clever originals. His storytelling about the songs and about some of the characters that had impact on his music was pure delight.'  - Irish Society of Delaware.
