This year will mark the 16th year of the Southbury Celebration – a family friendly event with food, music and fireworks. The event was initiated by Brian Jones and Dorothy Manville as part of the events coordinated through the Southbury Historical Society to celebrate the 325th anniversary of the first settlers arriving in 1673 on the banks of the Pomperaug River at what is today Settler’s Park.
Once again the hard-working Celebration Committee, led by Brian Jones and Carole Van Tassel, has put together a great evening thanks in part to the continued generous support of the Southbury Training School who has made its campus available for the event and the parking.
The Celebration will run from 5 to 8 pm along the banks of Lake Stibbs on route 172. There will be a DJ starting at 5 pm followed by a showcase for our Pomperaug High School and Rochambeau Middle School musicians starting at 5:45. This will include a half hour performance of the superb jazz trio, PrymeTime Trio, which I had the opportunity to hear at this year’s teacher convocation for Region 15. I am always hesitant to make recommendations, but I promise you will be thrilled to see and hear these young people perform.

The event is starting a bit earlier this year as it is on a Sunday night, October 5th. Gates open at 4:30pm. There are some new food vendors so come hungry. Many civic organizations will be there with information including Southbury Volunteer Firemen’s Association and Southbury Ambulance Association who will have tours of their equipment. The Town of Southbury will also have a table so please stop by to learn about recycling and our Local Prevention Council’s efforts to address alcohol and substance abuse. At 7pm we will have a beautiful rendition of the National Anthem followed by spectacular Fireworks.
Show your pride in Southbury and attend this year’s Sweet 16 Southbury Celebration.
