8-Year-Old Dies After Mount Southington Skiing Accident
Police on Wednesday confirmed a child involved in a skiing accident at Mount Southington later died.

SOUTHINGTON, CT — Southington police on Wednesday confirmed that an 8-year-old involved in a skiing accident at Mount Southington on Feb. 19 died the following day.
Officers went to the ski area that day and said the mountain's ski patrol treated the child on scene. The child was then transferred to Yale-New Haven Hospital, police said.
Police said they were informed on Feb. 20 that the child had succumbed to his injuries.

Offcials from Mount Southington were not available for immediate comment on Wednesday morning into Wednesday afternoon.
Southington police would not officially identify the child, but a law enforcement source confirmed it was 8-year-old Logan Murphy Mengold of Southbury, whose obituary referred to a skiing accident.

Logan was described in the obit as a natural athlete known for wearing No. 3 in several sports. He played for the Pomperaug Lacrosse program, was on the U-9 Pomperaug Soccer travel team and recently started playing basketball. He was a competitive swimmer for the Panther Aquatic Club and his favorite and best strokes were the freestyle and butterfly. Logan enjoyed running and participating in 5K races, according to his obit.
The last fatal accident at a Conneticut snow sports area was in February of 2017, when a Brookfield woman died after a collision at Mohawk Mountain.
State police said a call came into the Troop B barracks at 8:31 p.m. on Feb. 11 about two skiers who had collided. When troopers arrived, one of the skiers, Lisa Kelly, 46, had already been taken by ambulance to Charlotte Hungerford Hospital, according to a report. She was then airlifted to Hartford Hospital but died of her injuries, state police said.
Two Connecticut skiers have died this season. On Feb. 10, an Ellington man was killed while skiing at a popular Vermont snow sports area.
The accident took place at Okemo Mountain Resort. Christian Hanlon, 39, of Ellington, was found by the Ski Patrol off an intermediate trail near the Jackson Gore area, according to a report. He was transported to the Jackson Gore base patrol station and, after further emergency care and evaluation, was pronounced deceased by the Ludlow Ambulance Service, according to a report.
