Area Students Show Off Art at Southington Library

In only its second year, the annual "Leaping Into Art" reception featured 26 students and drew almost two dozen families to the Southington Public Library.

Six-year-old Kyle Murrah was as smiles as he showed off his three dimensional bird to parents, friends and teachers Wednesday night.

"My favorite part of it was getting to paint it," Murrah said. "I picked blue for my bird because it's my favorite color."

Murrah, a Kelley School student, was one of 26 featured in the Second Annual Art Reception hosted by art teacher Katie Kopcha, owner of the "Leaping Into Art" school at 92 N. Summit St. in Southington. The reception drew nearly two dozen families to the Southington Public Library as students showcased their best piece from the past year.

The program included works from students ages four to 15, Kopcha said, with each child given a certificate and carnation to recognize their achievments.

"This is a chance to celebrate all of my students' creativity and to recognize their hard work," Kopcha said. "Art is something that can improve self confidence, enhance problem solving skills, foster creative development and most importantly it the brings joy to those who create it."
