Songs We Love to Sing

The Southington Chamber Singers will give a free concert at Southington Library. The concert will include contemporary selections such as Harold Arlen’s Stormy Weather and George Gershwin’s Embraceable You, favorite American and English folksongs and some madrigals as well. Southington Chamber Singers is a unique ensemble that formed six years ago.

Unlike most choral groups, the Chamber Singers also share the responsibility of conducting between three members: Gwynne Hopko, Sandy Koenig and John Smayda. Each conductor decides which songs he or she would like to conduct - Sandy often chooses the most sentimental songs, John enjoys directing madrigals and Gwynne likes folk songs. Sandy Koenig says “We all love to sing and and would get together just for the fun of it even if we never gave concerts. Performing for the public is kind of the icing on the cake.”

Most of the music song by the Chamber Singers is performed a cappella, however for this concert they will be singing a few songs with keyboard accompaniment. Other members of the ensemble are Susan Koenig, Leana Gleicher, Tony Senatore, David Andrews, Krista Rescsanski, Cindy Cayer and Sue Smayda.
