Major Road Race To Impact Southington Streets: Police

More than 1,000 runners are expected for Saturday's O'Shenanigans 5K; road closures are planned in Southington and Cheshire.

SOUTHINGTON, CT —A major road race this weekend will take place on local streets, with motorists advised to watch out.

More than 1,000 runners are expected to take part in the O’Shenanigans 5K on Saturday, March 7, prompting temporary road closures and traffic delays in parts of Southington and Cheshire.

The Hartford Marathon Foundation, which is organizing the race, said roads will reopen as runners pass through each section of the course.

The Southington Police Department will direct crossing traffic when possible, but motorists should plan for detours and delays during the event.

The race route will affect several streets and sections of the Farmington Canal Heritage Trail during the morning hours.

The SPD said Canal Street between Burritt Street and Meriden-Waterbury Turnpike will be closed from 9:15 to 11:15 a.m.

Additional road segments will be impacted between 9:55 a.m. and 10:30 a.m., including:

  • Canal Street between Meriden-Waterbury Turnpike and Peck Lane
  • Peck Lane between Canal Street and Schoolhouse Road
  • Schoolhouse Road westbound between Peck Lane and the Farmington Canal Heritage Trail

From 10 a.m. to 11 a.m., the following areas will be used for the race:

  • The Farmington Canal Heritage Trail between Schoolhouse Road and Burritt Street
  • Burritt Street between Canal Street and Clark Street

Event organizers thanked residents and drivers for their “support and cooperation” and urged those traveling in the area Saturday morning to allow extra time.
