Southington Tween Does Backflips For Fellow Schoolchildren
A 9-year-old Southington girl helped the town's social services department collect backpacks and school supplies for the new year.

SOUTHINGTON, CT — A 9-year-old is so dedicated to helping Southington Community Services collect school supplies for backpack programs, she's doing backflips for the community ... literally.
Last Saturday, Aug. 12, Evelyn Hawley of Southington hosted a special event for the town's social services department called "Backflips for Backpacks."
It worked like this.

If you had a backpack to donate to the department's "Back to School" backpack program, the athletic tween would do a backflip for you — and she did.
In fact, the flexible youngster did enough backflips to allow the department to collect two cart fulls of supplies at the Southington Town Green.

The social services department was elated with both the effort and the turnout.
"Thank you, Evelyn, for this wonderful idea for a donation drive and for helping Southington students prepare for the upcoming school year," wrote Southington Community Services Wednesday. "Your donation is greatly appreciated, and thank you to all who contributed!"
