Armed Night-Time Burglary Suspect Arrested in South Windsor

DNA evidence led to the arrest of the man in connection to a case in which a woman returned home to find a burglar in her kitchen with a gun

An East Hartford man has been charged with a late-night burglary that was interrupted when a resident returned home and found the suspect standing in her kitchen with a gun last September.

South Windsor Police arrested Robert M. Cummings, 50, of 509 Burnside Avenue, on a warrant on Feb. 18. He was brought in from the correctional facility where he is currently being held on other charges to be served with the warrant, according to Deputy Chief Scott Custer.

Cummings was also arrested last Sept. 27 in connection to another overnight South Windsor burglary in which a father found a man with a gun outside of his bedroom, while his two children were sleeping, and police soon arrested the suspect who had fled from the house.

Cummings’ charges stem from a burglary that occurred on Sunday, Sept. 13 at about 1 a.m. A resident of the Twin Circle Drive condominiums on Ellington Road called police to report she had just interrupted a burglary at her home.

The woman said that she had returned to her home just before 1 a.m.

When she opened her front door she saw a tall, thin black male dressed in all black standing in her kitchen, according to Custer.

The man had a hooded sweatshirt on and had a handgun in his hand. The homeowner ran out of the condominium and called 911.

Officers searched for the suspect with a K-9 unit but were unable to locate anyone in the area.

Custer said the officers and investigators located and collected evidence that later yielded a DNA match to Cummings.

Cummings was held on a $250,000 surety bond and was arraigned later Thursday morning.
