SOUTH WINDSOR, CT — Here are some recent notable accomplishments by local college students, as provided by readMedia Newswire.

Assumption College, Worcester MA

  • Assumption's Department of English has announced that Gina Marie Savino, of South Windsor, has become a member of Sigma Tau Delta, the International Honor Society for those who study English. To qualify as a member of Sigma Tau Delta, students must earn a minimum of a 3.4 grade point average in the major and a 3.0 grade point average overall. Candidates must also have completed at least three semesters of college course work and have completed a minimum of two college courses in English language or literature beyond the traditional first-year English requirements.
  • The Assumption Department of Athletics has announced that Brandon Sze, of South Windsor, has been named to the 2020 Assumption men's tennis team. Though the spring season was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Sze, Class of 2022, competed during the team's spring trip to South Carolina.

Eastern Connecticut State University, Willimantic CT

  • Eastern Connecticut State University recently inducted 30 psychology students into Psi Chi, the international honors society for psychology. Students are invited into the society if they are a declared major or minor in psychology, have at least 12 credits of psychology coursework and a GPA of 3.5 or higher in psychology and an overall GPA of 3.0. Among the recent inductees were Megan Avery of South Windsor, a junior who majors in Psychology. Abigail Bourdon of South Windsor, a junior who majors in Early Childhood Education and Psychology.
  • The Eastern Connecticut State University Warriors baseball team was off to a 4-1 start in its 2020 season of play before the NCAA cancelled all college sports through the end of the school year due to concerns over the coronavirus pandemic. Nonetheless, 39 student athletes made the team, which was vying for another competitive season in the Little East Conference (LEC).
    Among the scholar athletes is freshman pitcher Jason Ray of South Windsor, number 37.

Roger Williams University, Bristol RI

  • Stephanie Dunia, Camille Fabrycki, Olivia Flint, Haley Geithner, William Pineo and Tyler Sarra, all of South Windsor, have been named to the fall 2019 Dean's List at Roger Williams University in Bristol, R.I. Full-time students who complete 12 or more credits per semester and earn a GPA of 3.4 or higher are placed on the Dean's List that semester.

Springfield College, Springfield MA

  • Alison Baranauskas of South Windsor is the recipient of the 2020 Springfield College Class of '63 Senior Award. This award recognizes a senior who has demonstrated an exceptional work ethic, strong time management skills and a dedication to the campus community. This senior has held significant employment throughout college, while also being active in co-curricular activities and maintaining a good academic record. This award was established in 2014 with generous contributions of the class of 1963 to celebrate their 50th Reunion. Baranauskas is majoring in Health Science/Occupational Therapy.

University of Connecticut, Storrs CT

  • Mollie Fleming of South Windsor was recently initiated into The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi, the nation's oldest and most selective all-discipline collegiate honor society. Fleming is among approximately 30,000 students, faculty, professional staff and alumni to be initiated into Phi Kappa Phi each year. Membership is by invitation only and requires nomination and approval by a chapter. Only the top 10 percent of seniors and 7.5 percent of juniors are eligible for membership.

University of Scranton, Scranton PA

  • Rebecca Russo of South Windsor was among the 31 University of Scranton students inducted into Sigma Theta Tau, the international honor society of nursing. For induction into the honor society, students must have completed one half of the nursing curriculum, demonstrated ability in nursing, have a grade point average of 3.0 and rank in the upper one-third of the class. The honor society was founded in 1922. Russo is a senior nursing major at the Jesuit university.
