Deadline for Nominations for South Windsor High Hall of Fame Extended

Inaugural hall of fame class will be announced in mid to late November.

It’s hard to believe, but South Windsor High School does not have a hall of fame to commemorate the those who have made significant contributions in the areas of academia, athletics and the arts.

But that’s about to change with the high school celebrating its 50th anniversary this year.

Indeed, Athletic Director Chris Wanner announced at the Board of Education meeting on Tuesday that the deadline to submit applications for nominations for the inaugural hall of fame class has been extended to Nov. 2.

“I’m kind of surprised [that South Windsor High doesn’t have a hall of fame],” Wanner said in a telephone interview Thursday. “We have such a long history. It’s not accusatory, but at some point it has to start and this is the perfect opportunity.”

Wanner has received about 30 nominations thus far. People eligible for the hall of fame are alums who have graduated at least 10 years ago, former employees who either resigned or retired at least five years ago or people who have provided some form of distinguished service to the school, Wanner said.

South Windsor alums eligible for the hall are those who have made significant contributions in athletics, academics, the arts or some other area of the school, Wanner said.

While there is no hard and fast number of members that will be inducted in the first class, Wanner said that she envisions two from each decade of South Windsor High’s existence.

The selection process will be done by a committee comprising three school district employees and six community members, with Wanner serving as an ex officio member with no voting rights.

Inductees will be announced sometime in November, Wanner said, with the induction ceremony to take place on March 2, 2013 at Maneeley’s Banquet and Catering.

Additional hall of fame classes will continue to be inducted in the future - hopefully annually, Wanner said.
