Motorists are being sent emails informing them of bogus fines for alleged speeding violations, but police say it is a total scam.

SOUTH WINDSOR, CT — Police are warning residents to be aware of a scam being perpetrated via email, involving bogus fines for alleged speeding violations.

The email message suggests the recipient owes money for a "speed camera" fine, sent from an email address entitled Penalties@speedccamerafines.com.

"Nice try scammers, we don't use those in Connecticut, the website is based out of the United Kingdom, and the attached link for "photo proof" is probably a computer virus or malware. Don't take the bait, just delete these messages. We don't use speed cameras or traffic light cameras and we certainly don't have your email addresses to ask for payment. Please share this information with friends & relatives who might fall for the scam. (The intended target in this one is one of our dispatchers, she didn't fall for it, and she's a very safe driver!)"
