SOUTH WINDSOR, CT — Political campaigns often turn nasty and ugly, but the recent theft of signs supporting Democratic candidates for town office in South Windsor, called "unprecedented" by local party officials, has led to a $500 reward being offered for information "leading to the identification, arrest and conviction of the individuals who are responsible for these thefts."

The reward offer was posted Thursday morning on the South Windsor Democrats Twitter page.

A number of campaign signs disappeared from the lawn of Democratic Planning and Zoning Commission incumbent Steve Wagner earlier this week. They were eventually recovered in a storm drain.

A handwritten cardboard sign, including a racial slur, was placed on Wagner's property, demeaning President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris. The sign contained the slogan "Trump 2024."

State Democratic chair Nancy DiNardo released this statement Wednesday:

"Vandalizing campaign signs is old news. But replacing them with hateful, racist signs is a new low in political discourse. The vile messages posted by Trump supporters on South Windsor lawns should be condemned by every rational and thoughtful person. My Democratic colleagues and I condemn this hate, and I call on my Republican counterparts to do the same. Be the leaders you were elected to be. Donald Trump didn’t win the 2020 election. Stand up and say so, and help stop this destructive and offensive behavior now."

Anyone with information is asked to contact Democratic town chair Anthony Duarte at tonygolfs@att.net.
