South Windsor Obituary: John Stiebitz, Jr., 84

Condolences to his family and friends.

John A. Stiebitz Jr., "Jack," 84, of South Windsor, passed away suddenly on January 6, 2017.

Born on May 29, 1932 to John A. and Doris (Kellner) Stiebitz, he was born and raised in Rockville before marrying Jean Brewer, on August 8, 1953, and moving to South Windsor to raise his family. He graduated from Rockville High School where he was a member of the varsity basketball team. Upon graduation he served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War where he was stationed in Germany. After serving on active duty for two years, 1953-54, he remained in the reserves until 1960.

After the army he was a salesman for many years, ultimately starting his own coffee distributorship, J & J Distributors, a successful business he ran for close to 25 years with his wife Jean. Jack was a sports enthusiast playing basketball, softball, golf, and loved fishing and bowling.

He enjoyed watching his children and grandchildren play field hockey, soccer, volleyball, basketball, softball, and baseball. He coached his son's baseball teams for many years and umpired during his free time. Jack's favorite past times were playing cards and hanging out with friends at both the Army Navy Club and VFW. Jack also enjoyed watching UConn women's basketball and the Red Sox.

He was predeceased by his wife of 60 years Jean Brewer Stiebitz. He leaves behind three children: John David Stiebitz of Storrs-Mansfield, Karen J. Stiebitz Rogliano and her husband Guy of Shelton, and Teri L. Stiebitz of South Windsor. He leaves five grandchildren: Justin Rogliano, Megan Rogliano Field and her husband Taylor, Jamie Rogliano Riofrio and her husband Joseph, Christine Lemieux Guni and her husband Ergys, and Brian Lemieux. He leaves three great-grandchildren. He also leaves his best friend and "brother from another mother," Francis Laforge. Jack was an avid cat lover and leaves behind his feline friend, Panya.

Calling hours will be held Wednesday, January 11th at Samsel & Carmon Funeral Home, 419 Buckland Road, South Windsor from 4 - 7pm. A memorial service will immediately follow calling hours. Burial will be private at the request of his family.
