South Windsor Town Council Refers High School Artificial Turf Project to Planning and Zoning

The council voted Monday night to move the project forward.

The South Windsor Town Council voted 6-1 Monday night to refer the new artificial turf project at the high school to the planning and zoning commission, according to the Hartford Courant.

The Courant reports that the planning and zoning commission will determine whether the $1.5 million project, which includes a new track and other upgrades in addition to the artificial turf, is consistent with the town’s zoning regulations.

Town Attorney Keith Yagaloff told the Courant that the referral to the zoning commission was a routine procedure and is a requirement for the town council to lease, sell or modify any town property.

The town hopes to have a contractor hired by next month in order to complete the project by Sept. 1. Critics have recently spoken out against the project over concerns with crumb rubber, the small black pellets used as infill on turf fields, according to the Courant.
