The Mayor’s Update

As your Mayor, I will periodically provide updates on the activities and progress we have made on behalf of the residents of South Windsor.

MDC

The “General Surcharge “rate increase, imposed by the MDC, has generated a good deal of concern among residents. These changes will affect over 1800 residents. I spoke at the Board Meeting of the MDC, where I explained the impact these rate changes will have on our residents.

WPCA:

We had a constructive meeting with chair of the WPCA, Town Representative Fred Shaw, the Town Manager, Councilor Wagner, Councilor Pendleton and guests from WPCA of Vernon.

Discussions were held about the documentation of the Capital funds, reserve funds and current status and sewer charges.  There will be a meeting with the WPCA and TC member Committee to discuss rates, in February.

I am inviting our WPCA to attend the meeting of the Town Council on Jan 21st, 2014. Please send us the questions or concerns that you may have and would like to be addressed.

STRATEGIC PLAN UPDATE:

In January, we will plan to hold meetings of the Strategic Planning Committee, on Mondays, prior to regularly scheduled Town Council Meetings. This will provide an opportunity to develop short, intermediate and long term strategic plans.

COMMUNITY EMERGENCY RESPONSE TEAMS

CERT training will begin in January. Jay Gonzalez has developed an 8 week training program. Class members have already begun to enroll.  I am glad that we are moving forward on this important aspect of community preparedness.

EMERGENCY ADVISORY COMMITTEE:

We will be forming the Emergency Advisory Committee, in January. This will provide community members with the opportunity to support and enhance the efforts of our outstanding first responders. Various community groups will be represented on this committee.

ELEMENTARY SCHOOL PROPOSAL:

A detailed proposal on the Elementary School project has been presented to the Town Council.  The plan is available on Town website. Please send us your questions you may have.

TOWN MEETINGS:

In an effort to make Town Council meetings more efficient, regular meetings will begin at 7:00 PM, starting in January. Residents are invited to attend meetings at Town Hall, where they are welcome to speak to Councilors. Meetings will also be televised.

MAYORAL APPOINTMENTS TO COMMITTEES AND COMMISIONS:

I have made the appointments to the various town and Town Council commissions. These were based on individual interests, knowledge and contributions to the community. We have a pool of talented residents and Council member who are anxious to assume leadership roles.

ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT:

I have initiated discussions with the various stake-holders and individuals experienced with economic development. This includes mayors of other towns.  The discussions are giving me a greater understanding of where we, as a community, need to invest our resources. I will be providing further updates on this important issue.

I will continue to keep you updated on our Town Council meetings and progress. As always, I am anxious to hear you ideas and concerns.

Dr. Saud Anwar, Mayor
