STAFFORD, CT — A cow that had escaped from a meat packing plant last week had one day of freedom before being hit by a sport utility vehicle, state police said.

The crash took place at 4:08 a.m. on East Street near Hydeville Road in Stafford, state police said.

The cow had escaped from the New England Meal Packing plant on Furnace Hollow Road a day earlier and wandered into the path of a 2010 Honda Pilot heading East on East Street, according to a crash report.

The cow had to be put down because of life-threatening injuries sustained in the collision, according to a crash report. The driver of the Honda, a 52-year-old Manchester woman, was not injured, state police said.
