WILLINGTON, CT — State police said they used teamwork to corral a wayward driver who hit 110 mph along a stretch of Interstate 84 in Willington Tuesday.

At 3:18 p.m., a state trooper was conducting a speed enforcement detail on the westbound side I-84 near Exit 73 in Union, according to an incident report.

A white GMC sport utility vehicle whizzed past the cruiser at 94 mph and the trooper gave chase, according to an incident report. When the trooper then caught up to the GMC, the driver failed to stop and hit speeds of 110 mph and the trooper backed off, according to an incident report.

The GMC continued to head westbound on I-84 with several additional troopers positioned in the area of Exit 69 in Willington and waiting for him, according to an incident report. Working together, the troopers were able to box the vehicle in, and bring it to a stop, state police said.

The driver, identified as Gagan Khandate, 31, of New York City, was taken into custody without incident and the GMC was towed from the scene, state police said.

Khandate was transported to Troop C, where he was charged with: reckless driving, and disobeying the signal of an officer. Khandate was released on a $1,000 surety bond and is scheduled for arraignment in Rockville Superior Court on Sept. 24.
