2 Teens Killed, 4 Seriously Injured In Stamford Crash: UPDATE

Police have released the names of the teens killed and injured in the crash Monday.

STAMFORD, CT — A deadly crash on Canal Street early Monday morning left two young Stamford residents dead, two in critical condition and two in serious condition, police said.

Sgt. Jeffrey Booth said city residents Kymani Pollack, 19, and NiShawn Tolliver, 18, were killed in the crash, which occurred just north of the Canal Street junction with Ludlow Street.

Around 2:30 a.m., a 2008 Nissan Altima struck and knocked down two utility poles before coming to a stop, causing live electrical wires to fall on top of it.

Three people were able get out of the car but three were trapped inside, Booth said. Firefighters had to wait for Eversource to de-energize the lines before they were able to rescue two of them.

The third person, later identified as Pollack, was pronounced dead at the scene, Booth said. The other five teens were taken to Stamford Hospital, where Tolliver was pronounced dead, Booth said.

The driver, 18-year-old Jerry Diaz, and one of the passengers, 19-year-old Amaiya Callahan, were taken to the hospital in critical condition, Booth said.

The remaining two passengers, 19-year-old Erica Stephens and 20-year-old Alontia Moore, were taken to the hospital in serious condition, Booth said.

Booth said the Nissan was speeding south on Canal Street when the driver lost control just south of Henry Street. The car struck the first pole, breaking it into several pieces, then struck the second pole, snapping it in half, before coming to a stop, Booth said.

"At this time, speed appears to have been a factor in this crash," Booth said in the statement.

Broken signs and shards of wood littered the roadway while Eversource workers cleared the downed lines.

Canal Street at Henry Street was closed afterward, and anyone who needed to get to Ludlow Street was asked to "[drive] the wrong way on Ludlow Street," police said on Twitter.

Henry Street was also closed to traffic between Pacific and Canal streets during the investigation, but the road had reopened by 2:30 p.m.

The Stamford Police Department's Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Squad is investigating the crash and asks anyone with information to call 203-977-4712.
