7 People Displaced By House Fire In Stamford, Officials Say

Units responded to a home in Stamford on Sunday on a report of a kitchen fire.

STAMFORD, CT — Seven people, including children, were displaced by a fire at a home in the Belltown area of Stamford on Sunday morning, according to officials.

At approximately 10:38 a.m. on April 12, the Stamford Fire Department received 911 reports of a kitchen fire at a home on Newfield Avenue, SFD Deputy Chief Michael McCullagh told Patch. Nearby residents also reported black smoke coming from the rear of the home.

The first arriving units were from the Belltown Fire Department, followed by an SFD unit, McCullagh said.

Firefighters found the stove on fire in the kitchen and extinguished the flames after several minutes. A total of 38 firefighters and incident commanders responded to the scene.

McCullagh noted smoke detectors in the home alerted the occupants of a fire, and everyone was able to evacuate safely, but the home sustained smoke and water damage.

No injuries were reported to civilians, but a member of the support staff sustained a minor injury in the handling of equipment, McCullagh said.

The American Red Cross noted it was helping two families - four adults and three children - who were displaced by the fire.

The SFD advises residents to periodically check their smoke detectors to make sure they work properly.
