One hundred nine (109) athletes from Stamford took part in the 2011 Stamford KIC IT Triathlon on Sunday, June 26, putting their endurance to the test with a .9 mile swim in Long Island Sound, a 24.8
mile bike ride up into North Stamford and a 6.2 mile run through the streets of downtown Stamford.
Five hundred and twenty five athletes from throughout the tri-state area participated in the event; athletes joined with spectators and supporters and the event’s 350 volunteers for a lively Family Festival at the finish line. Thomas McWalters of Hartford, last year’s runner up, came out on top, winning in a time of 2:01:39. Brigitte Paulick of New York City was the top female finisher in a time of 2:24:42.
Monies raised from the Stamford KIC IT Triathlon benefit the free crisis counseling and emergency shelter programs for children provided by Cos Cob-based Kids in Crisis. In addition to this year’s
big race, a special KIC IT Kids Triathlon was held one day earlier (June 25) for children ages 7-13, encouraging kids to undertake an age-appropriate and non-competitive race designed to promote
healthy living. “The beauty of the City and the commitment of its residents and city officials make the Stamford KIC IT Triathlon a race that athletes everywhere look forward to,” said event co-chair James
Wenning.
