Aquarion Announces Water Main Replacement Project in Stamford Hospital Neighborhood
The project includes replacement of several hundred feet of water lines and realignment of one street.

Aquarion Water Company announced Monday that it will begin a two-phase water main replacement project on Spruce Street and Wright Street in Stamford’s West Side.
The project — which is scheduled to begin this week — coincides with the realignment of both streets as part of Stamford Hospital’s building project and will improve overall water infrastructure in the area surrounding the hospital. The work create periodic, minor parking disruptions each day for the duration of the project.
“This is a joint effort with Aquarion, Stamford Hospital and the City of Stamford to increase water reliability and fire flows in the area,” said Alan Huth, Aquarion’s Manager of Utility Programs. “We will be replacing the current aging water mains with larger, more durable mains, and adding a second source of water to the new hospital facility. We are working closely with Stamford Hospital, city officials, contractors and our customers to coordinate the work and minimize disruption.”

Phase 1 of the water main replacement project will begin the week of Feb. 23. It will be completed by mid-March and involves the replacement of 450 feet of 6-inch cast iron water main with a 12-inch ductile iron main on Spruce Street, from Stillwater Avenue to Hillhurst Street, and the replacement of approximately 450 feet of water main on Wright Street, from West Broad Street moving south to the beginning of the roadway realignment.
Phase 2 will begin on April 8, in conjunction with the start of the roadway realignment project, and will be completed in early May. Work involves the replacement of approximately 450 feet of water main. The roadway realignment area, which is a 500-foot section of Spruce Street and Wright Street, will be closed to traffic for 60 days during the roadway realignment project.

“It is very important that every component of our new hospital expansion plan has a positive impact on our community and we are collaborating closely with Aquarion to ensure this project will meet the future water needs of the hospital and surrounding area,” the hospital’s Executive Director of Facilities Management Michael Smeriglio said in a statement. “The water main replacement project is a much needed infrastructure improvement which meshes nicely with important upgrades to Wright Street, and we look forward to continuing to work with Aquarion as we approach the completion of our new hospital facility.”
