Decision Made On Classes At Stamford Public Schools For Feb. 24

A powerful winter storm ripped through the region Sunday into Monday, bringing over a foot of snow across Connecticut.

STAMFORD, CT — Due to the intense blizzard that ripped through the region Sunday into Monday, classes scheduled for Feb. 24 in Stamford Public Schools have been cancelled.

The school district says on its website the decision was made due to the "extensive cleanup" required around the city.

The state of Connecticut does not allow for virtual learning days.

Approximately 15,000 customers were out of power across Connecticut as of mid-day Monday, officials said.

Utility companies have brought in crews from nearby states and Canada to help with power restoration, which could take as long as between two and five days, depending on the extent of the outages, officials said.

As of 6 p.m., there were fewer than three customers without power out of over 65,000 in Stamford, according to the Eversource outage map.

The recycling and sanitation pickup in Stamford will be delayed by a day this week, the city previously announced.

Mayor Caroline Simmons over the weekend declared a winter storm emergency effective at 3 p.m. on Feb. 21, and extending through 8 a.m. on Feb. 25, unless sooner terminated.

Stamford’s Snow Emergency ordinance limits on-street parking during a declared snow emergency to allow plows to access and clear streets during extreme winter storms.

Additionally, residents are being encouraged to clear a three-foot space in every direction around nearby fire hydrants to allow safe access for first responders.
