"The farm is a hub of connection — to our food system, to nature and to each other," said Farm Manager Pete Novajosky in an event announcement.
"Each year we harvest thousands of pounds and hundreds of varieties of fruits, vegetables, herbs and flowers. All of this goes directly back into the community to nourish and be enjoyed by all who want it, regardless of what they can afford. We’re breaking down many of the barriers to fresh food access, but we need the support of the whole community to continue this work as the need is greater than ever."
Fairgate Farm is part of the Vita Health & Wellness District, a partnership that includes Charter Oak Communities, Stamford Hospital and other community organizations.
The farm’s farmstand operates from May through October and allows customers to pay what they can for fresh produce. The property also includes the Fairgate Community Fridge, a free refrigerator, food pantry and library located along the farm’s fence near the Stillwater Avenue bus stop.
The community fridge is part of the Food Rescue US Fridge the Gap program and receives weekly food donations. The site is accessible 24 hours a day, allowing community members to donate and take items as needed.
In addition to food access programs, the farm offers volunteer opportunities, cooking demonstrations, gardening workshops, annual festivals and events for schools, corporate groups and civic organizations.
