On Saturday, Nov. 15 the Stamford Public Education Foundation (SPEF) will be holding one of its bi-annual Reading is FUNdamental (RIF) book give-a-ways at the Main Branch of The Ferguson Library, 1 Public Library Plaza, Stamford, from 2 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. Children in grades K – 5 will have the opportunity to select a free book of their choice, hear guest readers, sign-up for a library card, enjoy arts & crafts activities and a snack.

In the 11th year of a partnership that has provided more than 10 million books across the U.S. for children in need, SPEF received 4,168 books to improve literacy in Stamford’s underserved communities. Nationally, RIF and Macy’s Be Book Smart campaign raised $2.6 million this summer, totaling $32 million dollars over the 11 year partnership. This summer, the Be Book Smart campaign was held in Macy’s stores nationwide from June 18 through July 13 and invited customers to make donations to help give books to local children.

“Year after year, SPEF continues to be amazed by the generosity of Macy’s customer’s, who have proved so willing to provide books for children in our community,” said Sennéa Raslan, Program Director & Marketing Specialist at SPEF. “These books will make a significant difference for our local children.”

As part of its literacy initiatives, SPEF also coordinated eight summer book giveaways at community centers in partnership with The Ferguson Library to distribute 250 books. It also contributes books to worthy causes such as PTO fundraisers, Stone Soup, Inspirica, and other programs serving low- income elementary school children.

Through customer supported fundraising campaigns, in-store events, and volunteer activities, Macy’s has helped RIF further its important mission to prepare and motivate young people to read. RIF is the nation’s largest children’s literacy nonprofit.

“Macy’s Be Book Smart campaign provides critical support to RIF programs across the country, and the commitment of Macy’s associates and customers brings new opportunities to help kids receive books of their own,” said Carol H.
