A 54-year-old man was indicted by a federal grand jury earlier this month, according to officials.

STAMFORD, CT — A 54-year-old Stamford man is accused of selling drugs after he was sentenced in another federal case and before reporting to prison, according to an announcement from United States Attorney for the District of Connecticut David X. Sullivan.

On March 3, a federal grand jury returned an indictment charging Danny Turkvan, also known as "Smooth," with possession with intent to distribute crack cocaine, which carries a maximum term of 20 years in prison.

Sullivan said committing the offense while on pre-trial release carries a mandatory consecutive term of up to 10 years in prison.

On Oct. 11, the Stamford Police Department's Narcotics and Organized Crime Squad investigated Turkvan and secured a search warrant for his person and his Spruce Street residence on Stamford's West Side, police said after his arrest.

In the late afternoon, officers set up surveillance on Turkvan's home and observed him exiting the residence and hiding a bag in a tree, police said. Officers moved in and arrested Turkvan and recovered $728 in cash.

The bag hidden in the tree contained 53 additional bags of crack cocaine, weighing a total of 12.7 grams, police said.

Turkvan was charged with possession of narcotics, possession of narcotics with intent to sell, and operating a drug factory.

Turkvan has been detained since his arrest. He appeared Monday in Bridgeport federal court and pleaded not guilty, Sullivan said.
