Participants Brave Frigid Temperatures In Annual SoundWaters Super Splash Event

The event raises about $10,000 each year to support SoundWaters

STAMFORD, CT — Despite frigid winds off Long Island Sound, about 100 participants entered the water on March 1 as part of SoundWaters’ annual Super Splash at Cove Island Park in Stamford.

The event drew a crowd of spectators who gathered to cheer on participants and support the organization’s climate science education programs.

Organizers said the event raises about $10,000 each year through the support of participants, donors and community members. The funds support SoundWaters programs that bring climate science and marine education to local schools, allowing students to study Long Island Sound as a living classroom throughout 2026.

Through the programs, students explore climate change, marine science and environmental stewardship connected to the Sound.

"Every year, this event brings our community together in a playful way but also serves as a powerful reminder that our climate is changing," said SoundWaters President Leigh Shemitz in a news release. "The Sound is an important part of our local environment, and this is one of the best ways to get people connected to it, through action, awareness and support for education."
