STAMFORD, CT — The Stamford Democratic City Committee on Wednesday voted 37-1-1 to expel member Anabel Figueroa.

Figueroa has been mired in controversy since comments she made about her primary opponent, Jonathan Jacobson, in an interview with the Latino Foundation of Stamford came to light on Aug. 13, which was Primary Day across Connecticut.

In a video, which was posted to YouTube by the foundation on July 28, Figueroa said, translated to English, "The Hispanic vote is going to determine on Aug. 13 who will win to represent or who will continue to represent you. We cannot permit a person who is of Jewish origin, of Jewish origin, to represent our community. It’s impossible."

Figueroa lost her primary race to Jacobson.

"Antisemitism and hateful rhetoric have no place in our political discourse or the City of Stamford. The Stamford Democratic City Committee underscored that tonight by voting 37-1-1 to expel Anabel Figueroa as a member of the Democratic City Committee," said DCC Chair Robin Druckman in a statement. "In a time when antisemitism and hate speech are on the rise, as Democrats, we cannot tolerate representatives of the Democratic Party using this type of language and violating the anti-hate policy of the Connecticut State Democratic Party platform."

According to the Stamford Advocate, Figueroa told supporters after the vote that, "It's not a surprise."

News 12 Connecticut reported that Figueroa will fight against the vote and take the matter to the Democratic State Central Committee.

Elected officials have condemned Figueroa's comments as antisemitic and they've demanded her to resign from her posts. Figueroa remains as a state representative, and she previously resigned from the Stamford Board of Representatives, although she later rescinded her decision.
